“My first car wash experience” – Evelyn’s Diaries

It started like any other Sunday morning. We had a lazy morning in our pyjamas. The sun was shining and the birds were singing. However, nobody had prepared me for the trauma that was to come.

My Daddy and I had took a little trip to a big shop. The big shop is called Tesco and it sells bananas, clothes, Peppa Pig toys and roast chickens. It may sell a few other things too, but these things are my favourites. We were going to Tesco to buy a roast chicken and some bread buns, to make my favourite meal, chicken sandwiches.

I skipped out of Tesco with a beaming smile, chicken in hand, ready to drive home and demolish my sandwiches. Suddenly, the curve ball came! My Daddy said something I had never heard him say before.

“Evelyn, do you want to go to the car wash?”

What is a car wash?

My brain went into meltdown, scrambling through my vocabulary of words to see if “car wash” was in there. It wasn’t. This was a brand new thing, how exciting! I love brand new things. So with joy in my voice I shouted “Yes Daddy!”

As we were driving there, my Daddy started to tell me all about the car wash. He basically said that it was a big bath for the car, with big brushes and that it will be quite loud. This sounds like so much fun I thought. I love water, I like cars and I am excellent at making loud noises too! A match made in heaven I thought…how wrong was I!

We arrived at the car wash and drove in, it was like a small tunnel with REALLY big brushes. Everything was so calm to start with. The machine turned on and started spraying the car with water. “This is so much fun” I thought, as I laughed at the machine soaking the car with soap and bubbles.

Suddenly, I felt a darkness all around me. It was like the blue skies out the windows all turned dark and all the joy in the world had gone. A deafening sound erupted as the car wash brushes seemed to turn evil and angry. They started to spin viciously as they crept forward ready to tear the car to shreds.

I started shaking in my car seat. The brushes approached closer and closer, I was terrified yet, couldn’t take my eyes off them. The volume increased and I felt as though I had no option other than to curl up in a ball, cry as loud as I could and scream, “DADDY HELP!”

Daddy did not help.

Daddy held my hand and said it was ok. This did absolutely nothing to prevent the onslaught of the big brushes, which finally made impact with the car. I cried and cried and was shaking to my bones as they moved past my window. The noise then seemed to lessen, as the brushes were gone. I emerged from curled up state and looked out the window to assess the damage. Without any warning at all, the brushes came back, louder than ever! This time they were going the other way, it was all a trap to make me look!

I finally escaped

Eventually, the evil brushes finished attacking the car and I could see them moving away. My Daddy confirmed as much when he asked me to say goodbye to the brushes. Being the polite and respectable toddler that I am, I wiped my tears from my face and said, “Bye bye brushes” and waved as they left.

It was all over.

The car was cleaned, the brushed were gone and all was silent. I could see blue skies again. There was happiness in the world again. There was hope of escape.

“Did you enjoy that?”

My Daddy turned around and asked me if I had liked the car wash. I took a second to pause, assess what I had just experienced, so that I could find the right words to justify how I felt.

Taking a deep breath, I replied “YES!” with a beaming smile on my face! I had never felt a rush like it. I wanted to do it all again! Yes, I still had tears on my face, but I thoroughly enjoyed the car wash.

My Daddy didn’t really expect this response. I think it may have been my uncontrollable tears and shaking, all whilst curled up in a ball screaming, “I DON’T LIKE IT”, which made him think I hadn’t enjoyed myself. But this couldn’t be further from the truth!

I haven’t stopped talking about the experience ever since, I have told everyone I know (basically my Nannas)! The only problem is that the car is all clean now, so apparently we don’t need to go back to the car wash again for a little while. Therefore, I am trying to think of a plan to make the car dirty again so we can go back, I am sure I will think of something!

Either way, I will see you soon big brushes!
